Trump Meets Putin in Alaska, Texas Dems Cave, Whitmer Blasted Over Bridges vs. Corporate Welfare

All eyes are on Anchorage today as President Trump meets Vladimir Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, pressing for a Ukraine cease-fire under the threat of “severe consequences” if Moscow won’t budge—Zelensky was briefed but won’t attend. In Texas, Democrats are finally caving, returning home as Gov. Abbott readies another special session to ram through the GOP redistricting map. Back in Michigan, MDOT warns that over 100 bridges could face closure by 2035, sparking outrage that Gov. 1. Putin meeting in Alaska: It’s on—President Trump meets Vladimir Putin today at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage (around 11 a.m. local). The White House bills it as a push for a Ukraine cease-fire after warning of “severe consequences” if Moscow won’t move. Zelensky isn’t attending but has been briefed; security is tight for Putin’s first U.S. visit in years.
  2. Texas Dems are giving up and coming home.
GOP says it will adjourn and call a new special session if Democrats don’t return to make a quorum for the redistricting map.
  3. MDOT warns 100+ Michigan bridges at high risk of closure by 2035 without more funding—fueling GOP claims that Whitmer prioritized “corporate welfare” over roads. A Mackinac Center analysis says about $670M has been paid out via SOAR—largely to five EV/renewables projects—with zero “qualified” jobs reported so far; Whitmer/MEDC say these factories are long-term and still ramping.

House Speaker Matt Hall says AG Dana Nessel only “got principled” about the MEDC after Gov. Whitmer began “embracing” Trump—pointing to subsequent raids and subpoenas—while the probe centers on a $20M grant to Global Link International tied to Whitmer donor and former MEDC board member Fay Beydoun. Whitmer says she’s “very troubled” by the allegations; Nessel has warned MEDC may not deserve state funds if it keeps “stonewalling.”
