Thune, Trump warn Democrats: Republicans are united, and it’s time to end the shutdown

President Trump met with Senate Republicans yesterday as the government shutdown drags into its third week.

The president said Republicans “will not be extorted” into giving in to Democrats’ demands, an indication that any end to the Schumer shutdown remains far off.

A second Trump-Putin summit appears to be off the table — at least for now. After Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s “productive” phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, the White House says there’s no need for an in-person follow-up. President Trump echoed that sentiment, saying he doesn’t want a “waste of time” but left the door open. The leaders had planned to meet in Hungary to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, but with Russia continuing its assault and diplomacy stalled, plans have frozen.

House Republicans have referred former CIA Director John Brennan to the DOJ for criminal prosecution, accusing him of lying to Congress about the CIA’s involvement with the discredited Steele dossier. Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan claims Brennan made “numerous willfully and intentionally false statements” during testimony about the agency’s role in the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment on Russian election interference. Brennan has denied any wrongdoing.
