The U.S.-led campaign against Iran intensifies as global energy markets reel from escalating disruptions in the Persian Gulf.
In a major retaliatory strike, Iran attacked and set ablaze two foreign oil tankers in Iraqi waters using explosive-laden boats, killing at least one crew member and forcing Iraq to suspend operations at key oil ports—further choking shipments through the vital Strait of Hormuz and driving crude prices above $100 a barrel amid fears of prolonged supply shortages.
In response, the International Energy Agency announced the largest-ever coordinated release of 400 million barrels from member nations’ strategic reserves, with the United States contributing 172 million barrels to stabilize markets and counter the crisis sparked by the ongoing conflict.

Detroit has once again been ranked as the unhappiest city in America according to WalletHub’s 2026 “Happiest Cities in America” study, released in March 2026, reclaiming the bottom spot (No. 182 out of 182 large cities analyzed) after placing second-to-last in 2025. The ranking, which evaluates factors across emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community/environment (including metrics like depression rates, adequate sleep, poverty, divorce rates, sports participation, and leisure time), gave Detroit a total score of 29.55—the lowest overall—with particularly poor showings in income/employment (182nd), emotional/physical well-being (181st), and community/environment (175th). Conservative outlets and critics, including The Midwesterner, have framed this as part of “Whitmer’s Legacy,” tying the persistent challenges in Michigan’s largest city to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s policies and leadership since 2019, amid ongoing issues like high poverty (around 33.8% in related reports), economic stress, and low life satisfaction.
