President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” narrowly passed the Senate

JD Vance breaking the tie—and now heads to the House. The massive package cements Trump-era tax cuts, boosts defense and border funding, slashes red tape, and aims to shrink the welfare state. Critics say it’s a budget buster, but Republicans call it a return to prosperity. Meanwhile, Trump’s Middle East diplomacy is back in the spotlight with a proposed 60-day Gaza ceasefire backed by Israel. On the culture front, UPenn will strip Lia Thomas of women’s swim titles after a Title IX investigation—part of a larger Trump administration crackdown. Plus: Trump wins a $16 million settlement from CBS over a deceptive 2020 interview edit, and RFK Jr. drops a bombshell claiming the CDC buried a study linking vaccines to autism. Gas prices hit 4-year lows, but some GOP lawmakers are sounding the alarm over spending and climate carveouts in the bill.

Trump’s sweeping tax cut and spending bill heads to House
The “Big, Beautiful Bill” tax cuts Republicans argue could spur enough growth to offset the cost, the CBO and fiscal hawks say it would add roughly $3.3 trillion just through 2034. Critics warn this would drive deficits above 7% of GDP, deepening long-term fiscal strain and cutting health and food support amid rising debt levels. The bill next heads to the House, with Republicans racing to meet a self‑imposed July 4 deadline.
What’s inside the Senate GOP’s “Big, Beautiful Bill?”
Republicans are touting several major wins they say deliver on Trump’s America First agenda:
  • Permanent Trump-era tax cuts – Locking in individual and business tax cuts from 2017, aimed at boosting middle-class income and job growth.
  • Border security – Billions for the wall, more Border Patrol agents, and expanded deportation authority.
  • Defense spending – A significant increase in military funding, including new investments in weapons, pay raises for troops, and cyber defense.
  • Medicaid and welfare reforms – Cuts to entitlements, with tighter eligibility and work requirements designed to reduce dependency.
  • Energy independence – Deregulation and fast-tracking permits for oil, gas, and coal development—rolling back Biden-era climate mandates.
  • School choice expansion – Federal support for charter schools and voucher-style programs parents can use for private or homeschool options.
  • Bureaucracy crackdown – Funding cuts for the IRS, EPA, and DEI-related federal programs, as well as moves to dismantle parts of the “administrative state.”
Republicans say the bill is a bold blueprint for restoring prosperity, securing the border, and shrinking government. Critics call it fiscally reckless.

Israel / Hamas ceasefire?
President Trump has unveiled a U.S.-brokered proposal for a 60‑day ceasefire in Gaza—backed by Israel and set to be delivered to Hamas via Qatar and Egypt. The deal would require Hamas to release an initial group of 10 living hostages and 18 deceased, with talks aimed at extending it—or making it permanent—thereafter. Israel has endorsed the plan; Trump warned Hamas that rejecting it risks worsening conditions. But Hamas hasn’t formally accepted it, insisting on assurances of a full end to the war and Israeli withdrawal

UPenn is stripping swimmer Lia Thomas of titles and revising women’s swim records, after a Department of Education investigation—part of the Trump-era push—found the university violated Title IX by allowing a biological male to compete in women’s sports.
UPenn will also issue apologies to female swimmers, adopt biology-based definitions of gender, and ban biological males from female teams and facilities.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon praised the move as a “restoration” of fairness in women’s athletics.

Paramount just agreed to pay Trump $16 million to settle his lawsuit over a 2020 60 Minutes interview. Trump claimed the segment was deceptively edited to boost Kamala Harris. CBS denies wrongdoing, but the payout goes to Trump’s future presidential library—and now 60 Minutes must release full transcripts of candidate interviews going forward.
